A new venue in town, and it’s a beauty.
The newly-named OVERLOOK HALL at 209 East Whittley has now emerged
from its two-year renovation in spectacular form. First opened in 1929 as a
Christian Science church, the building was originally designed after the Chapel San
Croce near Florence, Italy. After more than 60 years of service, it closed in the
early 1990s and remained shuttered until 2009 when it was purchased by a
property restoration expert. Today it sparkles once again.
Nearly all of the original features are still in place. Old-growth Douglas fir
spans the length of the sanctuary while massive open beams stretch out above.
A raised stage at one end provides the focal point, while three majestic doors
open to a spacious view deck on the other. Windows all about provide both
ventilation and natural light.
Now reconfigured as a special events venue, Overlook Hall opened its doors
last week for the first time in more than 20 years. The Hall played host to the
Chamber’s monthly mixer on Thursday night and then converted itself to an
elegant dining hall on Friday for a Catalina Island Museum charity dinner. Both
events met with rave reviews.
Beginning June 1st, Overlook Hall will be available for rental for groups up to
125 strong. With so few mid-size venues available in Catalina, this new/o
beauty will be a valuable addition to local resources. Inquiries from such diverse
events as anniversaries, corporate meetings, extension classes, film festivals,
reunions, weddings, wine tastings and yoga lessons have already been received.
According to venue manager Jenea Dominguez, the use of tables and chairs
and even some original pews) is included in the hall rental fee, and there is no
food minimum.
There is little doubt that OVERLOOK HALL’s central location, classic styling, and
pristine condition will make it an instant success.
